These are exhibitions of the work students have created in classes. Students enrolled in Project Block this semester will present from Project Block; other students will select the class they want to present from. They will start by "yes, and"ing each other to establish the base reality. When one of them says the First Unusual Thing, the other player will repeat it back, word for word. Then the first player will repeat it word for word as well, and then they will continue playing. INTRODUCE: Harold (long form improvisation) While student volunteers play out a Harold, the audience should fill out their own word associations. TICKET OUT: Harold notes. LEARNING GOAL: Define "game" and identify "first unusual thing."
DO NOW: Watch "The Dead Parrot Sketch" Turn & Talk: Where does the humor in this scene come from? CONNECT/EXTEND/CHALLENGE: What is the "game" of a scene? We will read the start of The Improvisational Comedy Manual: Chapter 3 together. Connect --> Put an asterisk* next to sentences that already make sense to you. Extend --> Underline sentences that you hadn't considered before. Challenge --> (Circle) any sentence that doesn't fully make sense to you.
